Tucson — The American Board of Radiology (ABR) announced earlier today in an email to candidates and program directors that its board examinations will move to a virtual online format beginning in 2021. This represents a major shift for the organization from just weeks ago when the ABR leadership expressed reservations on moving to a virtual format. The news comes as a major victory for resident physicians and fellows in radiology and radiation oncology, including the newly formed Multispecialty Early Radiologic Career Coalition (MERCC). In its latest email correspondence yesterday to R3 (PGY-4) resident physicians across the United States facing uncertainty in their delayed Initial Certification (Core) Examination, the American Board of Radiology (ABR) has now alluded to the possibility of a future virtual exam, while reiterating lack of current capability in remote examination:
