Berkeley, California — Orbit (orbitcme.com) has become the first activity approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology that satisfies the Patient Safety requirement using internet-based searching and learning. Anesthesiologists will now be able to complete all of their MOCA 2.0 requirements, including patient safety and anesthesiology-specific credits, by searching the web for peer-reviewed abstracts and articles while logged into the Orbit plugin.
The ABA finally allows its diplomates to capture internet-based learning for both patient safety and MOCA 2.0 credit.
“Anesthesiologists are already learning continually from their patients using internet searches for abstracts and articles,” notes physician-founder Ram Srinivasan MD PhD. “It’s great that the ABA finally allows its diplomates to capture internet-based learning for both patient safety and MOCA 2.0 credit.”
The new Safety Micro plan from Orbit is perfectly designed to complete 2 credits per year, but anesthesiologists can also binge all 20 required credits using the Basic or Pro plans listed here.
What are some good patient safety articles to submit for credit through Orbit?
Anesthesiologists have already started to submit visits to articles and abstracts to Orbit in order to redeem for patient safety credit. Here are a few early examples:
- Drug Label Ribbons to Improve Patient Safety in Low-resource Environments, here
- Impact of the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist on Patient Safety, here
- Patient Safety in Plastic Surgery, here
- Advancing Patient Safety in Airway Management, here
Pro Tip: If you don’t have access to a journal, head to PubMed to look up the article abstract, and you’ll earn credit in Orbit through your PubMed visit.
How much patient safety CME does the ABA require?
Anesthesiologists need to complete 20 ABA-approved patient safety credits every 10 years, which comes out to 2 per year. According to the ABA, the “every 10 years” starts from the day after you are board certified. Read more about your MOCA 2.0 requirements here.
